I'm an A-N-I-M-A-L ! ! !

rib eye for two, animal

Food, glorious food!
Eat right through the menu.
Just loosen your belt
Two inches and then you
Work up a new appetite.
~ Oliver!

I heard the chorus sing as the plates of food, glorious food, came out of the Animal kitchen.

We started with the crispy corn hominy with lime while catching up over glasses of Napa Valley's Cabernet Sauvignon, Macauley, 2001 - a great year for Napa wine, according to KW. The little morsels were a light beginning to our gluttonous girls' night out.

flat iron steak, animal

As was suggested by our attentive server, we shared all the dishes family-style among the five of us. Barbeque pork belly sandwiches were split into two's and were a sweet and savory delight of flavors, as was the ricotta and goat cheese gnocchi with bolognese - one of my favorites of the night. The duck confit with dates, arugula, and pecans in a sherry vinaigrette with apple was refreshing, and the flat iron steak with sunchoke hash that was topped with a truffle parmesan fondue melted in my mouth [see above photo].

foie gras loco moco, animal

But the best dish of the night, hands down, had to be the foie gras loco moco with spam and hamburger topped with a sunny-side up quail egg on a bed of rice. So creative and unexpected, the combination of salty, savory, and sweet danced merrily in my mouth. You could not go wrong with foie gras or spam! Next time it's on the menu, though, I will have to order this one all for myself.

The evening ended with a tender rack of balsamic pork ribs, and the rib eye for two in an escargot butter with mash and brussels sprouts (except for the fact that the $75 plate was split in five pieces).

Everything was tantalizing, delicious, and full of excess. I was just sorry that we didn't find room for any dessert. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I'm in denial - five women would generally NOT be able to devour everything put in front of them. And yet, we did it. Even the servers were impressed.

Food, glorious food!
We're anxious to try it.
Three banquets a day --
Our favourite diet!

Just picture a great big steak --
Fried, roasted or stewed.
The food,
Once again, food
Fabulous food,
Glorious food.
~ Oliver!
