Best of LA: Sushi Sasabune

Sasabune - omakase sushi

You don't have to twist my arm to eat at one of my favorite sushi restaurants in LA: Sushi Sasabune.

When my cousin called and wanted some good food for dinner, I was happy to introduce this place to him - even AFTER I had an early dinner at 5pm.

So I called for a quick reservation for two at the sushi bar for 7:30pm, and was ready for my dinner #2 that night.

Sasabune - blue crab and tuna rollsThe dishes from the omakase set menu started coming out, one by one - as if a symphony of deliciously fresh fish danced in front of our very own eyes. We had yellowtail, tuna, fatty tuna toro, salmon with sea kelp, butterfish, uni, amaebi, halibut, and so much more! We also had a bowl of asari clams cooked in a nice light broth.

AA and I were in sushi heaven as we learned to eat our fish from light to dark, savored each bite with some Kurosawa sake, and anxiously awaited each new plate.

I also placed an order for Toro Ice Sushi - something introduced to me here and that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. My eyes rolled back (in true Sasabune fashion) as the ice cold, tender negitoro melted in my mouth along with its warm, sweet teriyaki sauce and slivers of green onions atop each toro ice sushi.

Sasabune - homemade kiwi sorbetNo dinner is complete without dessert. So we ordered some of Sasabune's house special sorbet. Here is a photo of their Kiwi Sorbet I had during another visit. What was *REALLY* good was their Lychee Sorbet made fresh and deliciously sweet. The only thing I didn't care for was the oddly paired coffee-flavored cookie that came with the sorbet.

The damage for the night came out to about two bills, but completely worth it. (I gladly spent my Christmas bonus here after the holidays.) For the freshest and most incredible sushi experience in LA, the only place for me is Sushi Sasabune.

D and I were suppose to hit up Sasabune a couple of Saturdays ago..but I had no idea they were closed on Sat & Sun! So, we checked to see if Nozawa was open. They were closed on the weekends too! Baaah! It's ok, we ended back at Sushi Zo which was still amazing. Hopefully we'll get to experience Sasabune soon.
