After the USC win over Cal last week, I worked up my appetite and was in the mood for some Hide Sushi. I ran to the ATM in anticipation of my meal, only to find that the restaurant was already closed at 9:30p on a Saturday night. I forgot that the small Japanese restaurant on Sawtelle (like so many others on this little strip of good eats on the westside) closes up shop pretty early.
I was bummed and went to sleep early.
But... when my family mentioned going to dinner the next night and that they were thinking of Hide Sushi, I was overjoyed with the great timing!
It was about 5:30p when we arrived to Hide Sushi last Sunday evening, and we were quickly seated at a table - just moments before the dinner rush came in. We started with some shrimp tempura and salmon skin salad as appetizers before eating our sushi [pictured above]. The salmon skin salad was pretty salty and a bit too fishy for my taste - but then again, they garnished the salad with bonito flakes. And I hate bonito flakes.

My family ordered off the menu - the Nigiri [pictured above] and the Chirashi dinners [not pictured] with an assortment of rainbow colored sushi - from red tuna, orange salmon, pink shrimp, yellow egg, green wasabi, and more.

I ordered some of my favorites [pictured above]: fatty tuna toro, salmon, special scallop, freshwater eel, and albacore with ponzu sauce [not pictured]. All of which were delicious and fresh!
By the time we were finished, there was a long wait along the walls and just outside the restaurant of anxious sushi-goers on Sawtelle. We made our way out and headed to Beard Papa's for dessert. Cream puffs, good sushi, and USC football victories - always a great weekend!

Hey there! and off-topic comment, but Ghetto Gourmet is in LA this week! (I found out by chance, since they didn't send it out to their e-mail list). And yes, I went solo - and had great fun. Will be blogging about it soon! ;)
And so many good things are popping up on Sawtelle, I can't wait!
The top picture's text makes it look like an ad with a gutsy slogan. "Yeah, we take cash only, and the wait's long, but we're still in business. That tells you something about how good the sushi is, don't it!"
Hey Raph, Your comment made me crave a little Hide Sushi today. Very affordable lunch special, you can't beat!
