Eat, drink & be merry raved of the sushi at Sushi Karen in Culver City which is just a few minutes away from where I live, so I knew I'd have to check it out.
Hidden in the midst of Culver City's mix of artist and industrial shops, Sushi Karen's simple yet modern storefront can be easily missed. We found some street parking across the street and walked into this narrow and quaint little Japanese restaurant. There were few patrons inside, and we quickly were seated at one of their tables rather than the small sushi bar in the back of the restaurant. I was excited to try a new sushi place and perused the menu.
We ordered some chicken teriyaki and tempura because MS wanted some meat with his sushi. The chicken was good, but the tempura was delicious. Extra crunchy - the way I like it. Portions were relatively small but then again, it was a sushi restaurant. And it was a good appetizer to get us prepared for the rest of our sushi dinner. We then ordered a sushi platter to try a variety of fresh fish that night, and everything was delicious. But then again, you can't really mess up a cut tekka maki roll or ebi shrimp sushi.

But what was REALLY good was the Amberjack Jalapeno Kanpachi sashimi with ponzu sauce. Each slice was a bite full of sweetness and a whole lot of spice! My mouth, sinus passages, stomach, throat... could only handle about two bites worth as I started gulping down my ice cold water. It was definitely worth it, and so much better here than at Irori Restaurant. But my jalapeno sashimi loving heart still belongs to Chocolat. For some good sushi eats at a reasonable price in the heart of Culver City, Sushi Karen is definitely a secret worth sharing! Thanks EDnBM!

does the interior have nice modernist decor? if so, i'm there =P
The decor is okay - pretty minimalist if I remember correctly. I did like some of their art, but nothing as great as some of your more trendy sushi spots. It's a bit unassuming in there. ;)
Whoa... That's a lot of ponzu. Still, jalapenos with sushi is such a great match.
