The days of my youth come back to me when I think of those two lovely words: Summer Vacation. It's been years since I've had one, and I'm welcoming this almost novel idea with open arms and a hungry appetite.
I celebrated my last day of work with great Strawberry Passion from Cold Stone Creamery - layers of moist red velvet cake and strawberry ice cream (one of my favorites!) with graham cracker crust and strawberry puree, covered in a fluffy strawberry frosting. As a token of appreciation, I also received some heartfelt notes from colleagues I will miss dearly and great gear for the upcoming football season.
So with the end of one chapter of my life and a newfound sense of possibility, I know I'm ready for what lies ahead.

The next day, MS and I took to the open road and drove our way up to Northern California, taking the scenic 101 and 1 routes.
On road trips, it's great to talk story and listen to some good tunes on the iPod - we had our KOST 103.5 playlist. As we drove up the coast, MS fondly reminisced of his family camping trips to Pismo Beach State Park, digging up clams, and eating them on the beach. So we stopped at Pismo Beach for lunch to check out the clams.

After a quick dig on the beach and chat with the PB lifeguards, we sadly concluded that there were no clams to be found that day.

Hungry, we stopped in one of the first restaurants we came across - Two Blocks Off the Beach. After a quick rundown of the menu, I knew I wanted the Tri-tip Green Salad with Peanut-Cilantro Dressing [$11.50 - extra sauce is more]. The salad was everything I hoped it would be - crisp and fresh leaves mixed with a creamy dressing that tasted more like BBQ sauce than peanuts or cilantro, and a medium cooked tri-tip that was soft, moist, and well seasoned.
We finished lunch with some sweet strawberries bought from the side of the road. Plenty of fruit stands along the central California coast, we chose one close to Pismo Beach.
Along the way, we made a few stops to check out the scenary:

Pelicans playing in the wind

Windsurfers playing in the wind, taken from the car

Sailboats in Monterey Bay
After a full day of driving along the windy curvy California coast, we drove into Monterey Bay just in time for dinner on the Fishermen's Wharf.

A stroll down the strip, we decided to get some Steamed Clams in garlic, parsley and white wine at John Pinto's casual Italian seafood restaurant, Domenico's on the Wharf. After our disappointing clam dig at Pismo Beach, we figured we'd order some clams while we were there, and they were deliciously fresh. We also started with their Fried Oysters that were an appetizer on their daily specials' menu. Normally, I'd pass on oysters but give them to me fried, and I'm a happy eater. These were a lot more moist and tasted a lot more like raw oysters than I was used to, but with a douse of lemon and some tartar sauce, they were absolutely delicious. They were one of MS' favorites.

I also ordered the Sea Scallops with Fettuccine [$21.95 for dinner] that were pan-seared and served with wild, fleshy mushrooms, freshly grated parmesan cheese, cream and nutmeg. The scallops were soft and juicy with just the right amount of meaty firmness. The sauce was definitely mild to the palette. So with a dash of salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon, the pasta tasted much better with a bit more flavor.
With night nearly upon us as we finished our meal, we drove another few hours to reach our final destination for the day - Napa Valley. And it was well past our bedtimes.
And although I absolutely love Los Angeles, it's always good to get out of the city and back in touch with the open road.

It looks like a really good time.
Yaaay...so far lookin good! I love TRI-TIP!
Hi BoLA - Looks like a great time. I love the "it's always good to get out of the city and back in touch with the open road" phrase! Hope to see you both soon.
Your timing couldn't be better! A friend is visiting soon and she plans on driving with some other up the 101 and 1 to SF. She was asking for recommendations on places to eat...and now I can just send her here!
Hey Indoor Tanning Lotion Sales! I'm not sure if you're spam or if you check out my site or um.... whether to delete this comment or not. I'm not looking for indoor tanning lotions at all. But yes, it was a really good time.
Hey Jeni! Girl...you know, it's all about the tri-tip meat! Mmm... let me know when you'd like some time off from work for refreshingly cool mint mojitos and gelato.
Hey Kirk! I'll be down in SD next week after my trip to Miami... maybe we can do lunch or something. =)
Hey DJjewelz! We got off the 1 after Monterey b/c it was already dark and well... no more scenic route. But we also left LA later than planned so if you leave early in the morning, I think it's a great trip up to SF. Also, I think it's right before Hearst Castle... make sure you've got a full or pretty full tank of gas. Otherwise, you're stuck with some pretty hefty gas bills when you fill up your tank in one of those small towns on the mountain. EEEK!!!!
What a nice trip that sounded and looked like. That drive up the coast is beautiful. I need to do that again and follow in your footsteps...SIGH...but for now, I'm in the office, its hot out, and I can't wait to go back to sleep.
Sounds like your summer vacation is off to a great start. Can't wait to read about your Napa culinary adventures....any plans to hit French Laundry?
many ask this question in life: would you rather take the long scenic route to your goal, or the quick and boring route.
my answer is that sometimes in life you need to take the longer scenic route.
of coarse the rental car had something to do with it too... kudos to korea's mini-wanna-be bentley.
Hey Elmo! Yes, it's definitely nice to be out of the office. I see a road trip in your near future!!! =)
Hey TAG! Yes, summer vacation is fantastic! I absolutely LOVE Napa... too bad it's freakin hot up there though!!! 100+ degrees!
Hey MS! I'm so glad we took the longer scenic route. (and yes, the sun/moon-roof on the Kia was a nice touch too!) Thanks for driving most of the way up!
K, I always tell myself to take the 1/101 on the way up but can't ever do it. The 5 is much better. One time up north, I was able to drive through Monterey, Gilroy (garlic capitol) and Solvang. The clam digging looked fun. Good seeing you and MS after the long excursion.
Hey Kristy,
Looks like you had the right idea to get outta L.A. Was there from the 15th til this past Tuesday (with a questionable roadtrip to Vegas in between) and it was killer HOT!! The pasta and scallops looked delicious and the strawberries looked very refreshing! Looking forward to more of the adventure...
Hey EDnbM! The drive up is SO worth it! Gilroy's awesome! =) Can't wait to get my groove on at Respect tonight! ;)
Hey Anon! Thanks for stopping by... Hmm..."questionable roadtrip to Vegas"??? Sounds interesting and killer HOT for sure!
I have visited this site and got lots of information than other site visited before a month.
