My Solo Day Trip to Sausalito

Riding the San Francisco Ferry

With MS off to work, I began my solo adventure by taking the BART to the San Francisco Embarcadero and bought a roundtrip ticket to Sausalito for the day that cost me about $15. Along the way, I met a very nice Canadian mom from Vancouver named Mabel. She and I were both adventure seekers, traveling alone to the Bay's neighboring Marin County town. But we found each other and quickly became companions for the morning.

A brief ride across the cold, foggy, grey Bay on the ferry, and we were welcomed into a bright, blue-skied, sunny Sausalito.

Sausalito Day Trip

As we walked along the main street of Bridgeway, I noticed the bright yellow signage of Lappert's Ice Cream. Now normally, I wouldn't consider getting a scoop before lunch but this time, I felt inspired. My old supervisor shared with me that this was her favorite dessert in the Bay area and that I had to have some. I checked the time, and it was a little after 10am - good for a scoop of Kona Coffee, I foolishly thought. Creamy and light, the first few bites were nice. But it turned out to be too early for ice cream, and I had a slight stomach ache for the rest of the morning.

My new friend Mabel and I kept walking and stumbled upon a cute cafe. She was in dire need of her caffeine intake, and I was in the mood for some real breakfast sustainance - Bacon, Egg, Cheese English Muffin Sandwich at Caffe Trieste. Just the right amount of heartiness, I was ready for the rest of the day.

While there, we chatted with a Sausalito local who sat at the next table. She shared some of her current gallery recommendations - Galerie Elektra and Spirit and Stone Gallery. She also shared that on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, Sausalito showcases its artists, galleries, restaurants and shops during their Sausalito Artwalk from 5:30-8:00pm along the Caledonia Street neighborhood.

Too bad for me, it was only Monday.

Sausalito Art

So along we went, passing through what Mabel considered "the last vestiges of artists from the 60s." I know that the driver's license map of the USA may not be a novel idea, but since it was new to me - I loved the concept and snapped this photo of it from one of the gallery storefronts. We stopped in front of The Art Car by Heather Wilcoxon and marvelled at the mass of trinkets, do-dads, and other weird collections that were painted on, placed in, and fastened to this fossilized vehicle.

Sausalito Houseboat Mailboxes

Nearby the Art Car were a number of painted Sausalito Houseboat Mailboxes all in rows that to me, epitomized the very spirit of this eccentric community of creative individuals.

Definitely, my kind of people.

But this was where my new friend and I were to part ways, and I was on my own again.

Scoma Restaurant

With a late breakfast came a late afternoon lunch. After a recommendation to stop at Scoma's Restaurant along the Sausalito Bay, I was quickly seated at a small table for 1 and ordered their New England Clam Chowder bowl. Deliciously warm and creamy, I bit into nice chunks of potatoes and clams. And if I didn't know any better, I could have sworn there were some tasty lobster pieces in the chowder as well.

Ferry Back to SFHappy that I made the long BART and ferry trek to Sausalito, I was ready for a well-deserved nap. I couldn't wait to tell MS of all my Bay Adventures.

Hey Kristy,

Looks like you had a great day of adventures! That sure looked like a lot of ice cream. That bacon egg and cheese english muffin looked delish...too bad you didn't get a shot of the New England Clam Chowder...I was drooling at the description!

Hey Anon! Hmm...starting to wonder if I know you.

Anyhow, the ice cream WAS a LOT! And I gobbled up the entire breakfast sandwich! The clam chowder picture's up but doesn't do much justice to it. So many adventures to post...so little time. ;)

Your NorCal adventures sound like such a fun (and YUMMY) time! You covered a lot of ground over a few days.

You know- there's a Lappert's on the Hermosa pier. Next time you're in my neighborhood, I'm taking you there! ~CL (Yes finally I left you a comment) :)

Sorry for the back-to-back, rapid-fire posts, but I am riveted on series of posts your SF Trip! I also visited Sausalito recently, and I took a picture of the same license-plate map of America! It reminded me of an old National Geographic World poster I had of the preamble spelled out in license plates. You have good taste BOLA!
