My SF Adventures Continued...
It's a Battle of Words with Crabs and Bees

Crab House

While on vacation, it's always good to indulge and my trip up north was every bit hedonistic. One evening, MS and I took in the San Francisco city sights and ended up at Pier 39's Crab House for their 3-pound crab dinner for two which was about $50 worth of deliciously tender and moist crustacean.

We also ordered a bowl of garlic noodles [$7.95] that ended up being a somewhat bad idea. Between the two of us with bibs on and nutcrackers in hands, crab shells were flying everywhere and ended up getting mixed in with our side dish. The pasta reminded me of the butter noodles by Lipton (just with some garlic added) and not worth ordering. Next time, I'll ask for more free bread. And definitely more napkins - MS and I went through a nasty amount of cloth and paper napkins just to keep our hands undecently clean.

There's just something carnal about cracking open the crab shells to get to the small morsels of decadent meat inside. Not what I would call a good first date dinner out, but for the daring and confident - it's a fun must do.

Spelling BeeWe also were able to purchase tickets to see the Tony Award winning musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County SPELLING BEE at San Francisco's Post Theatre.

After enjoying the documentaries Spellbound and Word Wars, I knew I'd LOVE this new musical about a childhood memory that still haunts me today: The Elementary School Spelling Bee.

The word I misspelled was unknown to me - a scrawny, pig-tailed 8-year old girl but one I'd come to know forever after.
PULLEY: A simple machine consisting essentially of a wheel with a grooved rim in which a pulled rope or chain can run to change the direction of the pull and thereby lift a load.
Source: American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language
All I could think of were the bullies in the yard and began to spell my dreadful fate out:
P-U-L-L- (is it Y? IE? EY?...) - Y
And in less than a second, I felt a sudden sinking in my stomach. So when Leaf Coneybear's character sings...
"How could a flea such as me think [s]he'd be good at spelling? How? I don't know... I like my hair. Really, it is pleasant to the touch. I toss my hair... a bit too much. It doesn't move. It simply sits. I make a part. I'm not that smart."
...my silver memory came back to me and although I was good, I was just "not good enough" as one of the choruses had sung. I didn't ask why and simply said my goodbye.

This charming musical will bring out the kid in you as you cheer for your favorite characters - whether they be willing audience members who serve as volunteer spellers or the girl whose only friend has been the oversized dictionary in her house. A great family show, I recommend to all who love words, good stories, and cheering for the underdog.

Hey Jeni! The post-massacre pic would've been nasty. ;) Nobody wants to see that... hehehe!

Hey MS! Glad you enjoyed our cultural night out! Your crab performance outdid mine! You had crab pieces all up in your stuff. ;) Good times. Good eats.

The food looks great. i loved spellbound. I was in 3 spelling bees myself, furthest i got was 2nd place in the city semifinals. I remembered going head to head with some girl all the way to sudden death. They took 15 minutes to pick out 15 words from the dictionary and read them to us. The girl spelled more words than I did and it was quite tough. I'm still a big word/spelling fan and play yahoo! word games like texttwist and literati.

Hey EDnbM! Whoa...you are a spelling bee nerd! 2nd place in the city semifinals?! I didn't even make place. LOL! We should all play a round of Scrabble the next time we get together - I'll bring my Deluxe version. ;)
