Trust in the Bart, Trust in the Sushi
Sushi Echigo, los angeles

Smooth and sweet with a hint of tang from the sliver of kelp atop the fish, these little delights were definitely one of the highlights of our Friday night dinner out at Sushi Echigo. We ordered a second round of salmon sushi because it was just that good.

When we thought of what and where to eat on that night, we knew we wanted something light and healthy. So Tito's was OUT and so was Fatburger. Instead, we immediately thought of sushi and tried to think of places to go that were on the West side. With so many great sushi restaurants out in LA and Santa Monica, we opted to try something new. We checked la.foodblogging.com to get some ideas, (our trusted online source of good eats around the city), and read Jonah's review of Echigo. After a quick phone call to reserve a table for 2 at around 8 o'clock that night, we were set.

It was easy to see how this unassuming little corner restaurant on the second floor of a mini-strip mall on busy Santa Monica Boulevard could easily be looked over by passerbyers. I mean, I've been back home in LA for a year now and still - my radar somehow missed it.

Sushi Echigo almost reminded me of Sushi Sasabune in its early days of yesteryear on Sawtelle Boulevard. With its simple decor and plain tables, the main attraction was clearly the sushi bar and the two sushi chefs behind it - both working hard to get fine cuts of fish atop warm, sushi vinegar rice that all just melted in your mouth. The sushi chef in motion was nonstop, and I was oh-so-happy to be eating such deliciously fresh sushi with my epicurean partner in crime.

As with Sasabune, there's a sign on the wall that tells you to "Trust me." This time though, it's Bart Simpson whose drawn on the neon board of daily specials along with the infamous two words. A big Matt Groening fan of the Simpson series, I'm not entirely sure I'd trust Bart who asks, "If I do something bad, and there's no one there to catch me, does that make me good?"

In addition to the multiple orders of Salmon sushi, MS and I had the pictured Blue Crab Handroll, the Albacore Sushi with ponzu sauce, the fatty tuna Toro Sushi, and the Yellowtail Sushi. All of which were buttery and delicious, along with a simple yet fresh tuna maki cut roll and some butterfish that was smooth and slightly cooked to a nice soft firmness.

Normally, I would have ordered a round of amaebi sweet shrimp, but like its Sasabune influences, they serve the sushi without its head. And I love my shrimp heads fried like crispy sweet and salty fishy fries. Usually, the amaebi is one of the most expensive items on the menu as its a seasonal sushi, and I want to feel like I'm getting my money's worth by eating the shrimp meat, the rice and its head.

So after having our fill of fresh fish and sweet rice wine, MS and I went home happy without the full bloated feel in our stomachs. Good thing since I had to wake up early the next morning for the Revlon Run/Walk at the Coliseum.

Trust in the Bart. Trust in the Sushi. Trust Echigo's Toshi.

My mind also flashes "SUSHI" on and off, when I've had too much red meat and cheese. Light, refreshing, and those fried crispy shrimp heads! Who can resist that!

Hi Bola - No atama with the amaebi? That's sacrilege. Sounds like you had a nice carrb-protein load for you run-walk.

Hey ElmoMonster! My "sushi" button is always ON. Can never get enough of the toro, the amaebi, the sake, and the maguro. ;)

Hey Kirk! I know, right?! That was my one complaint. But definitely a good carb/protein meal for my walk the next day. :)

no head should be half price, sounds like a rip off...

do they really give you echigos or is it just false advertising.

Hey DJMC, Good times always. Can never go wrong with sushi. =)

Hey DCCF, That's why I didn't order the Amaebi and ended up eating more Salmon sushi! ;) Um...what are echigos? (Remember, I'm YONsei.)

Glad you liked it, we crave that place now and it's hard to go elsewhere. I don't order salmon that often, but almost always have two orders at Echigo.

Do you know what that strip of pickled something (daikon?) is on top of the salmon?

Hey Jonah! Yup. Good stuff, for sure. Thanks for the recommendation. ;) Hmm...what is Echigo?? Am I just dense or completely out of the know? The pickled something on top of the salmon is a sliver of kelp. =)

Hey Bola. Just stumbled on to your site. Was looking for some good eats in the Sawtelle area since I just moved here. Been to the usual suspects: Hurry Curry, Little Hong Kong Cafe, and Furaibo. Love them all. Got any suggestions for new places for me? Thanks!

After reading your post, I decided to have an omakase lunch Friday. There is something about warm rice (sushi) and STEAMING HOT RICE (crab roll) that just takes some getting used to. It does taste great though.

Hey FoodieFriend... Thanks for stumbling on by. ;) I love Sawtelle Kitchen but haven't been in a while but there's just so many good eats around the West LA area. Whatcha craving???

Hey DJjewelz... Wow. Omakase lunch? Haven't done that yet. Mmm...sounds delicious though!

Hey ColleenCuisine... Glad that MS and I stopped by Echigo's for dinner! Didn't know how popular it really is! ;)

Hi Bola! I love Japanese, Thai, Indian and Italian food. Pretty much everything and anything. I guess I just have to check back with your blog to see your recommendations! I want to try Sawtelle Kitchen and Echigo too. I had some friends try Blue Marlin, but they were disappointed. And I tried Sushi Tenn and Hide Sushi, but was not too impressed. I think I'll try Echigo this week...all this talk makes me hungry!!!

I'm disappointed with Sushi Echigo. I went on a Friday night, ordered the Omakase. Only one-third out of the nine courses that I considered to be decent, the others are pretty average. The worst part is the rice, so meshed-up and fluffy. Paying $45 per person (with tips & tax) with such so-so quality, I doubt that I will be going back again. Nearby, Sushi Sasabune is indeed more expensive, but the quality of sushi are way better.

Hey Anon! So sorry you had a bad experience with Sushi Echigo. I've only been once so can't speak for its consistency. Which of the nine did you enjoy/not enjoy, I'm curious? Not sure about the rice... and am a bit disappointed with my Sasabune experience.... it's just not the same since it got big and fancy. I liked it way back when it was a cool, hip hole-in-the-wall on Sawtelle. Thanks for your comment! =)
