Sea Bass Jewels, Blue Marlin

Last week, the usual suspects +1 from Michigan got together for some good eats and good drinks. The plan was to go to Furaibo and order some chicken kara'age and kirin. But when we got there, it was packed for a Thursday night. Not sure if that's pretty typical or atypical for this izakaya. So after waiting for almost an hour, we scoped out some other restaurants on Sawtelle that would quickly accommodate our large group of six. Enter Blue Marlin.

Nestled in one of the Sawtelle plazas on the west side of the street, Blue Marlin neighbors a line of restaurants including Hurry Curry and Kin-chan's. A Japanese-Italian restaurant, you can find many interesting dishes here. From uni sea urchin risotto to spaghetti with eggplants and wild mushrooms with garlic shoyu, there's so much you can choose from.

As soon as we entered the little restaurant, we were quickly seated. After all that waiting across the street at Furaibo, we were all ready to chow!

My newly made friend from Michigan who came to LA to pursue acting...like so many Midwestern transplants...and I had a lot in common. I hardly admit the fact that at one point in my life, I wanted to be the next Tamlyn Tomita with my DI competitions [dramatic interpretation] and my short stint in a local Asian American teen theatre troupe. But I still love the "craft." After chatting, we found that we both missed the first snow in Michigan and long summers on the lake. And we both ordered the Teriyaki Sea Bass [14.95].

The fish was cooked to perfection, moist and tender. Atop a bed of vegetables, this jeweled dish was sweet and just the right amount for a girl with a healthy appetite like myself. No grain of rice in my bowl was spared.

Other orders in our group included the Croquettes Curry [8.95], Vegetable Curry [7.95], Chicken Cutlet (Katsu) [10.95], and the Cilibonara Spaghetti with Egg Yolk on Top [10.95]. We also ended the meal with some Tempura Green Tea Ice Cream [4.95].

Eating out is always better with great friends who live and love to eat too.

I like this place alot, but was disappointed the last two times I've been.

I had the sea urchin rissoto last time, and it wasn't even close to being as good as the first time I had it.

My favorite is the chicken or pork cutlet served in an iron skillet with rice, topped with marinara sauce. That's some nice fusion!

Hi Kristy - I must say I really like your photos! BTW, I sat right behind Tamlyn Tomita recently, and I'm sure she has nothing on you....

Is that a raw egg I see? Blue Marlin sounds like my kind of place...too bad I can never get my lazy ass out to L.A. proper.

Hi xericx! Hmm...yeah, I don't think I could EVER get myself to order the UNI risotto. Hmm...Katsu with marinara sauce? That does sound yummy! =)

Hi Kirk! You know, she was Nisei Week Queen...maybe I should try out to be on court. But then again, I'm getting way too old now and could never walk down the aisle with a book on my head. Wave, wave!

Hi Elmomonster! That be a raw egg you see! Not my cup of tea...but there's so much more to eat...Yippee! You sound like me...I rarely get down to the OC...way too much traffic and driving time for me. LOL!

McTasty...the little nap we caught before dinner was nice. teehee! You like the photoshopping skills? I liked Dylan's approach of having a food map. Maybe next time, I should add a key to it. We'll see. Always a work in progress. =)
