Chili Cheese Fries and One Phat Burger at Fat Burger

Cravings. What a love-hate relationship.

Every so often, I get the munchies for chili and cheese.

I think it all started in elementary school where I learned my abc's and how to tie my shoelaces. You see, I often stayed after school until my mom or my grandpa could pick me up. It was there that I was introduced to chili fritos. For a mere 50 cents, I was given an open foil bag of Fritos and a scoop of piping hot chili made in the cafeteria with a plastic white spoon. Mmm...absolutely delicious! Especially on cold and rainy days.

Then there were the chili cheese burgers from Tommy's, the chili cheese hot dogs I'd get down the street with my grandpa, the chili cheese fries from Johnny Rockets in high school, and homemade chili with cheese over spaghetti out in the Midwest.

Not too long ago, I had yet another one of those lip smacking, salivating cravings for some chili and cheese. After telling MS that I had never been to Fatburger, it was a no brainer that we'd grab lunch at the Fatburger down the street from him on Wilshire Boulevard.

Reminiscent of a 50s diner, it had a definite retro feel to it - with the neon signs, the vinyl chairs and metal tables. I had heard so many people raving about Fatburger's that I knew I had to try it.

We got to the fast food chain restaurant right before a crowd of lunchers came in and were able to get our food pretty quickly. Since I'm not a huge fan of fried eggs in my burgers, I passed on it and went with the chili cheese hamburger with some chili cheese fries. The fries were covered in saucy burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth chili and shredded cheese without any beans - just the way I like them. Too bad we had to split them because they were gone in no time!

And my chili cheese hamburger was so delicious that I ate the entire thing! Better than Tommy's, better than Islands, better than Johnny Rockets, Fatburger has definitely become one of my favorite fast food hamburger joints in LA.

Hi Kristy - My favorite "chain" burger - Double King Fatburger on the char, no mayo, no relish, no pickles - used to get it at Fatburger in Brea once a week. Delici-yoso!!! And IMHO better then I-n-O.....

There was a big discussion about the best burger in LA on Lafoodblogging.com . I voted for Fatburger because of the size of the burger and option to add eggs on it, my favorite. I think i'm going to try the chili burger now.

Kristy, are you talking about Gold star Chili!????? over the spaghetti. oh man, on a stopover in cincinatti, i was stuck in the airport for about 2 hours and i saw ppl eating chili w/ spaghetti. the hell is that?! oh man, one of the best comfort foods i've ever had.

i hooked mac up with some of my homemade chili . i'll make some more for you guys. you supply the fritos.

Oooooh Fatburger! *drooling*

I always get The Big Fat Deal w/ skinny fries and add a side of chili to both put on the burger and dip my fries in!

And I'm iffy on the egg depending on what mood I'm in!

Hi Kirk! Mmm...I love mayo but yeah, no relish, no pickles for me either. ehhh....IMHO wa nani??

Hi Elmo! Looking forward to reading your post. =)

Hi Dylan! Yeah, I put my 2 pennies worth on that discussion. I did NOT like the Gold Star Chili, but yup...that's pretty much what I was talking about. Crazy midwesterners and their hella fattening, large portions of comfort food. You know...I also like spaghetti with curry too. ;) Yup...I'll bring the super sized Frito bag and plastic spoons! We can even play "SPOONS"!

Hi Pam! *slllluurrrp!* I like the fat fries with the extra potato! Man! I'm such the Carb Lover. Mmm...mmm...good! Must be the Asian in me! ;)

Another detail of note that i love about FB. Green Tabasco sauce. I love that ish! Too bad we're not walking distance to FB anymore.... but maybe that is a good thing, since the place is not too good for the pouchage.

Hi Kirk! Thanks for the translation! =)

Hi Mc Chili! A New Year's Resolution: to work on lessening the pouchage! ;) hehe!

Pouchage?!!..that sounds like a Mac word to me. Fatburger is my favorite fast food burger and Tommy's is a close second. Ice Cube made me want to try Fatburger.

Here are some non fast food burger joints I like.

Barney's on San Vicente has very good burgers.

The Counter in Santa Monica has a good burger and it's fun because they have a sheet with all these options on how you make it. You check off what you want and how you want it.

Father's office on Montana is supposed to be best burger in LA. Television as well as other's seem to say so but I have yet to try it since that place is so crowded all the time. They don't let you alter the burger in anyway, you take it how they make or you don't get one.

Hi Mark! You so know Mac's unique vocabulary. Pouchage="Happy Pounds." heehee!

Hmm...I don't know the Ice Cube reference. Was that in a movie?

I haven't been to any of those non-fast food burger joints yet. I hear a LOT about them though. May have to try them ALL in the New Year...AFTER April though. (I'm in a wedding and want to start watching what I eat. haha!)

Ice Cube Reference is to the song "Today was a Good Day"..."two in the morning got a fat burger..."

haha! Thanks MealCentric! ;)
