Some things never change. It wasn't too long ago that I got my undergraduate degree when I was a poor student, living on a student budget, living a student life filled with countless activities, sorority events, and early morning classes. Now that I'm back on campus as a member of the academic elite, I'm still not all that financially fortunate, wake up super early, go to meetings, help educate the masses, and have become the advisor to my old sorority.
Conversations with one of my good college buddies usually sound something like this:
friend: "You're Beanie from Old School!" *laughs*
me: "I am not!"
friend: "So what [Greek Letter] drama's going on nowadays?"
me: "How should I know?"
friend: "Because you were Hell Master, Mistress of the Dark, or something like that." *laughs*
me: "I don't know what you're talking about. I only helped out with Inspo Night."
friend: "Oh yeah. Inspiration Night. Well, keep inspiring your pledges! You are so Old School!" *laughs*
So after I spoke as a guest speaker (aka working alumna) at one of their Rush events, I picked up MS and we headed off to a late dinner. We thought of Zankou Chicken but decided on going to Sawtelle for some Asahi Ramen. Unfortunately for us, they were just about to close and weren't really taking any more customers for the night. We turned towards Sawtelle Kitchen. Closed. How about gr/eats? Open? Okay.

I'd been to this minimalist restaurant before with ST who's friends with one of the owners of Giant Robot, and knew that we could get some home cooked meals by Chef Nelson Magana. Very unassuming, the restaurant sits in a small loft space and has a simple paper menu stacked at the bench by the front door. Functional furniture worked yet lacked in comfort. Vegan and vegetarian friendly, the menu listed 12 dishes of the former and four of the latter.
We started with the gr/eats Mixed Fries [4.00] made up of lightly fried shoestring potatoes, bananas, and yams with a parsley garnish. Very popular, these fries aren't your ordinary Mickey D's fries. You've got a crunch with the potatoes and bananas while the yams are softer and sweet. Great with peppered ketchup, this appetizer leaves you wanting more.
For dinner, I ordered the Fried Chicken [7.50] while MS ordered the Mayan Chicken[7.50]. Both dishes looked somewhat alike with sauced up chicken, seasoned rice, vegetable ribbons and potatoes. Light and sweet, both plates were licked clean. Just like my grandma's cookin'...mmm...mmm good.
Usually, I stick with iced water with my meals (unless it's an adult drink). But that night, after a long evening with 17-21 year old young sorority girls, I indulged with a Calpico! A childhood drink of mine, I love the milky yogurty drink. Might be interesting to mix it up a bit with Mr. Belvedere the next time I drink it. Frank the Tank sums it all up when he says, "Fill it up again! Fill it up again! Once it hits your lips, it's so good!"

Hi Kristy - So you went from speaking to a bunch of students, to eating in a place that looks like a "classroom"(I checked the website)? Man you're really dedicated....LOL! Those frites look good - peppered ketchup, huh? Anything like ketchup that I used to open little packets of pepper into at MickeyD's??? Ooops, another childhood regression! And the "Fried Chicken" had sauce? Very interesting......
i love the decor of GR/Eats but I feel the food is very average. I do love the mixed fries though; so tasty. i don't think that places does too well and is banking off the fact that they have a relation to Giant Robot.
happy friday by the way.
Hey, did you erase my comment? I think all it said was i miss living on Sawtelle. Down with censorship!
Kirk: Yup, looks like I can't avoid the whole academic environments. eek! Ooo...I like to pepper my ketchup when I eat fries. If the fried chicken didn't have a teri sauce, I'd probably use ketchup or some kind of gravy with my potatoes too. Lol!
Dylan: Yeah, I like the decor too. Very simple. Clean. Artistic. Reminds me of an artist's studio. The mixed fries are yummy, and I do like their fried chicken. Can't say that I venture anything else though. And yeah, I like Giant Robot too. haha!
GT: Uh...I don't know what comment you left? Are you sure it was on this post? ;) How can anyone censor you @$$#!??!! hehehe! ;)
The little japanese Mom and Pop restaurant(specialized in handmade noodles but had sushi etc also) that occupied this space before gr/eats was amazing but noone seemed to know about it. Wish I had known about these blogs back then to spread the word....a great place bit the dust...
