It's been at least six years since I've visited my family on the Big Island of Hawai'i, and it's been way too long for a katonk like me. Hopefully, I'll make a trip out there sometime next year. I know that my Aunt Millie would love to meet MS and show him the local hangouts like Sam Choy's, Kapuna Beach, or cliff jumping with friends at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau.
But whenever I feel like I need to just get away, escape to paradise or just get some local grinds, I head towards the South Bay. With a strong Hawaiian presence, you've got Bruddah's, The Loft, Back in Lahaina, Teri Hawaii and King's Hawaiian. One of my favorite cakes is actually from King's. OK - really, two of my favorite cakes come from King's. The first is the Hawaiian Paradise cake made of three great tropical fruit flavors: Guava, Passionfruit, and Lime. As you can see, there's matching icing that's even more flavorful and delicious on top! And lots of lightly whipped cream too. Very spongy, moist, and airy - this cake is sweet and oh so delicious! Thanks to JT who picked this one up for our Alpha Nu get together. She's the BEST! =)
My other favorite cake from King's is the Chocolate Dobash cake. Also light and moist, this delectable chocolate cake is so good that it's quite sinful and irresistible for any chocolate lover. Made to order, we had this good eat last weekend for my niece's 7th birthday party.Never that far away from good Hawaiian eats, I get my fill of delicious cakes, kalua pork, lau laus, and loco mocos minus the poi. And I'm saving my frequent flyer miles for my next vacation out on the islands.

Hi Kristy - Haven't had chocolate dobash since I was a kid, looks ono! If we hadn't moved to San Diego, we'd have probably settled in either Torrance or Redondo. So much local kine stuff! Bruddah's is one of my favorites - though someone told me that it's gone downhill a bit - so will have to find out for myself soon!
Hey Kirk! Mmm...Dobash is so yummy! But then again, I've got a HUGE sweet tooth! I haven't been to Bruddah's in a couple years, but my dad used to know the owner way back when. Gotta check it out soon...need my kalua pork!!! ;)
King's is definately good eats for Hawaiian. I still prefer The Loft over King's but I will still eat at King's anyday. I enjoy sitting around the marine tank they have there. Naomi will always pick up a baked good or three from the bakery.
Mark: You're a lucky man. Baked goods from King's are a real treat! ;)
